Netflix II

Ah, so now Netflix is going to become Netflix and Qwikster!  The fun never ends. ):  Now I'll have to maintain two queues on two different websites, plus I get two entries on my credit card each month.  Given this change, perhaps it is time to look for alternatives to one or both services.

Time to take a look at Amazon Instant Video -> Prime Eligible, which I already have access to.  If it is good enough, I'll drop Netflix for streaming.

Who is running the show at Netflix?  They have managed to go from a leading and highly regarded company, to one that is ridiculed, in about two months.

10/10/2011 update: Looks like Netflix has seen the light, and dropped the Qwikster plan.  Given the earlier missteps, that is certainly the best move to make at this point.

Netflix

OK, so Netflix is going to increase my monthly bill by 50% after Sept. 1, 2011! I also seem to have lost the advantage of being one of the earliest subscribers. (I had been getting 4 discs for the price of 3.) So I'll probably drop to two discs and streaming, or 3 discs and no streaming, either of which will annoy the my wife and kids. Perhaps in the end we will drop Netflix and go with an alternative since we don't use Netflix much.

So not happy about this change.

Waiting, waiting...

Dropbox and BoxCryptor

I've been using Dropbox for about a year and a half now. File syncing between three Windows computers has been flawless, even when I've thrown multi GB tests with MD5 checksums at it. (I've done the same tests with SugarSync, but I've had syncing and file corruption problems, so I don't trust it for anything important. Customer service was unable to solve the problems I experienced. This is unfortunate, since SugarSync has some features that I really like.)

I trust Dropbox, and what they have said re: security issues recently. But there is always a possibility that they could be hacked and the contents of one's Dropbox exposed to the public or hackers. (As happened a few weeks ago...) So I've not put truly sensitive information in my Dropbox.

I've been using BoxCryptor for over a month now. Encrypted versions of files are stored in my Dropbox and synced between my computers, the unencrypted versions are available in a virtual local drive. I ran into a minor problem related to overall directory length, a Microsoft .NET Framework issue, but otherwise BoxCryptor has worked perfectly for me. With BoxCryptor only I have the encryption key.  (8/26/11 Update: I'm now using the alpha release of the BoxCryptor Android app which gives me read-only access to my encrypted files.  It is working great so far.)

Using BoxCryptor and Dropbox I can securely share files between computers.

A year with the Droid X

Well, it has been almost a year now that I've had the Droid X. While it has not been entirely smooth sailing, at this point I'm happy with the phone. It is the first smartphone I've had that I still want to keep using after one year.

The Palm Treo, I would not even sell it to an enemy. It didn't even work well as a phone!

The Blackberry 8830, worked well enough, but not enough memory.

The Blackberry Tour, a trackball that would not track. I have a coworker who still uses one, "how quaint".

I won't get another smartphone until 4G gets sorted out. I'll still go with Verizon, though with their recent changes I may look elsewhere.
